Synopsis:
Seemingly on a whim, Colm decides that he doesn't want to be friends with his BFF Padraic. Padraic does not take it well.
Over the years I've read plenty of articles about being dumped by your bestie, or your friend circle. And the victims usually have a crisis of identity. "Am I boring?" "I'm the replaceable friend??"
Padriac is the thrown-away friend in this movie. Overnight, he goes from best pub buddy to persona non grata. With no explanation. Well, with an eventual explanation, but it makes Padriac wonder and worry about who he is.
It seemed like there were 40 people living on this island off the coast of Ireland, so when Colm drops Padriac as a friend to seek higher pursuits, the news travels fast. All Padriac has is his sister and his miniature donkey, Jenny.
Colin Farrell did a smashing job as Padriac, and it's no wonder he's up for Best Actor. His transformation after several pivotal events was not overdone. I definitely felt his every emotion.
As a musician, there was one event that made me scratch my head. I won't spoil it. It was dramatic and it made its point and it propelled the story forward, but it sure was an odd decision.
Is it Best Picture worthy? Definitely. I have a few more to go before I make my final decision.
