AFI #97 Blade Runner (1982)

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

It is 2019 in Los Angeles, and Rick Deckard has been tasked to find and terminate four Replicants that murdered their way to escape an off-world colony. During his investigation, he meets Rachel, a Replicant who is unaware she is not human.

Oh Blade Runner, how I love thee. I have watched this flick so many times, that I didn't remember a lot about it. Sounds weird, doesn't it?

I'm not even sure which version I watched of this seminal SciFi masterpiece. According to Wikipedia, there are apparently SEVEN versions of Blade Runner: "The best-known versions are the Workprint, the US Theatrical Cut, the International Cut, the Director's Cut, and the Final Cut."

I am confident that I watched the US Theatrical cut, the Director's Cut, and the Final Cut. When I started watching the movie for this challenge, I wasn't sure which version it was (even though it had a premiere date of 1982). Once Harrison Ford started his voiceover, I thought "yep, original."

I have intentionally watched this movie, but in recent years I've only caught it on television. So I completely forgot how it started with Leon getting checked by a Blade Runner, I assume, before he kills the interviewer and escapes.

I'm not sure if this scene is in other cuts of the movie, but I realized that I never knew what set up the movie until then. I was pretty young when the movie came out, so I can understand not having picked up on that.

There are so many iconic moments, it's no wonder that this movie influenced sci-fi movies from that year forward.

Things that continue to stand out to me include Darryl Hanna's wig, Joanna Cassidy getting shot in the street, Harrison Ford and that questionable moment with Rachel, the replicants, Vangelis' score, Rutger Hauer, the advertisements--too many things to name.

Whichever version you watch, it's a delight to the eye. It is not shocking that this movie ended up on the AFI Greatest Movies of All Time list.
